How fun is it to give our beloved dogs an extra special treat? The only trouble is, these treats, especially store-bought ones, can be loaded with fat and calories.

That’s the last thing we need for our dog, Toby. He LOVES food and sits by the pantry door with wide, sad eyes, hoping for a treat. We gave in to this one too many times and learned our lesson the hard way when the vet told us he was overweight and need to go on a diet, asap.

Immediately after this, we cut down on the extra treats. We also fit in a little extra exercise for him. Slowly but surely, he dropped 10 pounds and is back to being the lively, energetic pup he once was.

Still, after this experience, we’re cautious about what we feed him. I was looking for another fun recipe to try out and found a homemade low-fat dog treat recipe that fit the bill.

These dog treats are super simple to make. There are two ingredients I didn’t have on hand: beef broth and dry milk. Other than that, all the other ingredients – flour, sugar, salt, butter and an egg – were already in my kitchen.

All you have to do is mix these together, roll out the dough and cut it into shapes of your choice. I picked the basic bone shape but you can do something fun, like a seasonal-themed cookie cutter.

After that, you just put them in the oven for 20 minutes and you’re done.

The smell coming out of the oven was so savory and so yummy that I almost forgot they were dog treats.

Of course, Toby stayed close to my side the entire time I was making these. He could not wait to have a bite.

But before he could dig in, I had to take photos. The wait was excruciating for the poor boy. As you can see below, he was being a creeper the entire time.

Don’t worry, shortly after this photo was taken, he got to devour one of these delicious low-fat treats.

Homemade Low Fat Dog Treat Recipe Prep

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup dried milk
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups wheat flour

Instructions

  • Mix together everything but the flour.
  • Slowly add in the flour, 1/2 cup at a time, to stiffen the dough.
  • Once everything is mixed well, transfer the dough to a clean, flat surface and roll out it out into a 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Using a cookie cutter of your choice, cut out pieces. We picked the classic bone shape.
  • Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Place the cut-outs onto a greased cookie sheet and pop into the oven for 20 minutes.
  • Once done, let the treat cool before serving. We hope your dog enjoys this guilt-free treat.

I would not say that anything with a half cup butter is low fat, and certainly not good for dogs!
